Chettinad is a region located in the Sivaganga district, historically ruled by the Ramnad kingdom of Pandya Nadu, with a small portion extending into Pudukottai district. Karaikudi is the major town in this area and is considered the urban center for Chettinad Village.

The Naatukottai Chettiars, fondly called Nagarathar, which means urban dwellers, have been a culturally and historically important community famous for their unique cuisine, agriculture, and architecture.

The origin of Chettinad dates back to the 13th century when the Nattukottai Chettiars migrated from Burma, Ceylon, Vietnam, and Malaysia to Karaikudi. They left their previous area, Kaveripoompattinam, following a massive flood.

The new settlement eventually became the Chettinad region with 96 villages in 1947, covering an area of 600-1500 square miles, of which around 76 villages still exist today. Chettinad finds itself nominated for UNESCO recognition for its palatial house sites of historic and cultural value.
